Bird watching: The wilderness of Nuytsland Nature
Reserve in Western Australia is home to the Eyre Bird Observatory
where over 240 species of birds are said to have been recorded
including Brush Bronzewings, flocks of Major Mitchell Cockatoos
and 12 other honeyeater species. Malleefowl, Chestnut Quail-thrush
and Southern Scrub-robins are regularly seen nearby and other
species recorded include Waders, Terns, Buff-breasted Sandpiper,
Red-necked Phalarope, Nullarbor Quail-thrush and Slender-billed
Thornbill. Another popular area for bird watching in Australia
is Daintree in the World Heritage Wet Tropic Area of Far North
Queensland which hosts 430 species of bird, Daintree Valley
is said to be home to 225 different species of bird.
Diving: For those interested in diving then there
is one of the greatest attractions on earth - the Great Barrier
Reef. For over 2,000 km this huge coral reef follows the eastern
coast and offers both the qualified and beginner an almost
unrivalled variety and scope. Most trips start from the town
of Cairns, also the jumping off point for many of the beautiful
tropical islands that dot the coast and great places for relaxing
on.
Walking/Trekking: For walkers in Australia there are
beautiful and varied mountain ranges, from the remote Kimberleys
in the west, to the higher and more developed Snowy in the
east. On Tasmania there is the Freycinet National Park, complete
with campsites and lodges and offering beautiful coastal walks
and scenery. Most of Australia is known as outback, sparsely
populated bush land that varies from arid mountains to dry
salt pans and in the Flinders Ranges this landscape can be
seen to its best, with gorges, ridges and cliffs all in evidence.
Wildlife/Safari: Having been a separate continent
from the rest of the world the wildlife of Australia has many
unique and fascinating species of flora and fauna. Creatures
such as the kangaroo, the platypus and the Kuala are all found
both inside and out of the National Parks. There are also
unique landscapes, such as the world-famous and imposing Ayers
Rock in the interior and World Heritage listed Kakadu National
Park. Situated in the Northern Territory, this park not only
contains some of the many interesting animals and landscapes
but also some of Australia's oldest and finest Aboriginal
rock art.
