Cultural Tours: It is perhaps the cultural side of
China that immediately strikes the visitor, claiming to be
the longest continuous civilisation on earth. The splendour
of the Forbidden City in Beijing, the impressiveness of the
terracotta army in Xian and the size of the Great Wall are
just some of the examples of what China has to offer and within
the country there is great diversity. Leave behind Han China
and you will be in areas where the culture preserves its own
identity, from the minority peoples in the south-western province
of Yunnan to the Central Asian communities in the far western
province of Xinjiang.
Mountain Biking/Touring: In the country of millions
of cycles this offers a wonderful way to get around. For the
mountain biker there are some wild and remote trips, notably
up on the Tibetan plateau, heading through the Himalaya towards
Nepal. For the touring enthusiast there are the back roads
of Han China, taking you to areas scarcely changed through
the ages.
Riding: The areas of Inner Mongolia and Central Asia
are still populated by peoples whose life revolves around
their animals. A visit to the Sunday market at Kashgar in
the north-west to see the horse sales is a centrepoint for
any trip, with riding itineraries available to the various
surrounding oasis.
Traditional/Tribal culture: Leave behind Han China
and you will be in areas where the culture preserves its own
identity, from the minority peoples in the south-western province
of Yunnan to the Central Asian communities in the far western
province of Xinjiang. Excellent China Holidays !
Walking/Trekking: This is as varied and easy/hard as
you could want. Perhaps a sacred Buddhist trek would be of
interest, either the tough circuit of the sacred and remote
Mt.Kailash in Tibet or the trek up Emei Shan in Szechwan province.
One of the most spectacular gorges in the world has been recently
opened to the walker - the Tiger Leap Gorge near to the beautifully
named Jade Dragon Mountain in Yunnan. For those who enjoy
bigger peaks then there are the Pamirs, with the beautiful
sloping peak of Mustaghata and for the intrepid the eastern
side of K2 in the Karakoram.
White Water: Tibet is the birthplace of many of the
mighty rivers that flow down into China, India and Pakistan.
They are remote, fast and some of the most exciting rafting
in the world. For those who like things a little more sedate
there is some beautiful scenery to be seen at a slower pace
on some of the lower stretches, notably near Guilin with the
sugar-topped Mountains.
