Even during the Classical era
Egypt was a popular tourist destination, with the Greeks and
Romans travelling to see what were even in those days the ancient
and spectacular ruins. To this day there is debate as to exactly
how the ancient Egyptians constructed some of the monuments
and buildings on such a huge scale, although the deciphering
of hieroglyphics has given an insight into the workings of this
impressive and complex civilisation.
