Wildlife/Safari: Ask most people where they would
go to for a safari holiday and most would probably reply Kenya.
This was were some of the first ever trips took place and
the game reserves are still amongst the best in Africa. The
most famous is the Masai Mara National Reserve (not a National
Park as the local tribesmen are still allowed to graze their
animals there), teeming with game and one of the most popular
safari destinations in Africa. As well as the luxury lodges
there are also several well appointed camps in which to base
yourself while heading out to view the animals either by vehicle
or, for the adventurous, balloon. For those interested in
wildlife there is much more to see and do that simply look
out for the large animals on Safari. Reserves such as Kakamega
offer tracts of untouched forest that are full of birdlife
and flora, while the Aberdares being at higher altitude offer
yet another variation of terrain and flora. It was here, at
the Treetops Lodge, that the present Queen honeymooned.
Diving: If you like water but at a slower pace then
the coast could be the place - beautiful islands such as Lamu
make a great place to unwind after the excitement. There are
also excellent beaches to the north and sout of Mombasa.
Walking/Trekking: Mt.Kenya, the highest peak in the
country is one of the best places to head to for. Using either
the mountain huts or camping it is possible to climb in mountain
over a course of several days, arriving at the summit in time
for the sunrise. Other options include Mt.Elgon in the west
of Kenya and well off the usual beaten track.
White Water: The mountains offer some good rafting,
from the relatively sedate to the exciting white-water of
the Galana River.
