The Himalayan kingdom of Nepal,
hemmed in by Tibet on the north and India along the south, contains
some of the most spectacular scenery in the world. Its villages
and smaller towns are natural and unspoiled, and even seasoned
travellers are fascinated by Kathmandu, an exotic clash of the
old and the new. Closed to foreigners until after the Second
World War it was known as the Forbidden Kingdom and little was
known about it. Today its biggest claim to fame is Mt. Everest,
the highest mountain in the world, and the other spectacular
Mountains such as Annapurna and Kanchanjunga of the Great Himalaya.
Yet there is more on offer than just mountains; the lowlands
offer some excellent wildlife and the chance to elephant safari
in the Chitwan National Park. Combine these attractions with
a rich and varied culture and a friendly and open people and
you have a country that few leave without fond memories and
the desire to return.
