Thailand is famous as a holiday destination, mainly thanks
to its world-famous beaches that were some of the first in
Asia to become popular holiday spots. In particular the resorts
on Phuket and Koh Samui now offer luxury accommodation and
comprehensive facilities to the traveller who wants to visit
the country and be pampered for a week or two. There are also
more economical options, with many small traditional hotels
and companies offering more affordable options while enjoying
the local hospitality, sights and culture.
Cultural Tours: Thailand also has some of the best
preserved historical sites in Asia, its long history as the
Kingdom of Siam still visible most notably in the ruined and
deserted City of Ayuthaya. The history runs up to modern times,
with Bridges and track from the infamous Burma railway still
visible at Kwai from the Second World War.
Walking/Trekking: The more energetic may prefer to
head to the north, which is predominantly inhabited by ethnic
hill tribes. The northern towns of Chiang Mai and nearby Chiang
Rai are the starting points for treks into the hills to stay
in some of the small mountain villages of the tribes.
Other activities: Other activities include the chance
to trek by elephant as the Taiwanese have been doing for centuries.
Other water activities: For those who enjoy water activities
Thailand has plenty to offer with rafting and canoeing on
some of the rivers, as well as backwater cruises on traditional
boats that let you enjoy the peaceful pace of local life.
