Vietnam, because of its turbulent recent history, has been
a couple of decades behind the exploitation of its overwhelming
natural beauty for the purposes of Tourism. Now this has changed
and as news of its attractions spread it is fast catching
up some of its more established neighbours as a mainstream
tourist destination.
Cultural Tours: For the cultural tourist Vietnam not
only has the archaeological remains of its long past but also
some of the best areas to visit the various hill-tribes that
still live their traditional life in the more remote areas.
Diving: One thing it certainly does not lack is beautiful
and as yet little developed beaches. For relaxing, snorkelling
and diving the traveller is spoilt for choice, from the larger
ones such as Kha Trang to smaller and more isolated spots.
With over 3,000 km of coast there is plenty of choice, and
includes some beautiful scenery such as Halong Bay with over
3,000 islands rising out of the sea.
Mountain Biking/Touring: Vietnam is a popular destination
for cyclists, because of both its terrain (mostly flat) and
also the popularity of bikes locally. There are different
tours and itineraries available in the mountains, plains and
the Delta.
Traditional/Tribal culture: For the cultural tourist
Vietnam not only has the archaeological remains of its long
past but also some of the best areas to visit the various
hill-tribes that still live their traditional life in the
more remote areas.
Walking/Trekking: There are many possibilities from
a camping trek to climb Fansipan (3,143 m) the highest mountain
in Vietnam, to walks in the Southern Highland region around
the city of Dalat.
Wildlife/Safari: Vietnam also has some beautiful National
Parks to preserve its beautiful and diverse flora and fauna.
The most famous is Cat Be Island, not only boasting several
completely different ecosystems but also excellent marine
life.
